Directions of research:

  • study of  natural and technogenic raw materials of the Kola Peninsula as a source of building materials, development of multi- purpose concrete compositions

Objects of inquiry:

  • non-metallic minerals, including stone resources, vermiculite and expanding shales;
  • by-products of mining enterprises, including overburden rock and ore-dressing tail- ings, ash- and slag mixtures, entrained dust;
  • various concrete compositions from local sources: light, cellular, heavy, heat-insulating, ornamental, refractory, heat-insulating, fire- protecting and heat-resistant.

Analytical techniques: chemical analysis, radio- and thermography, mineral- petrographic and radiation-hygienic assessment of starting and resulting materials, their physical-mechanical properties (strength, density, porosity, frost- and water resistance, crushability, abradability, etc.), electric- and thermo-physical trials.

The Laboratory incorporates the    Kola Testing  Centre for Building Materials and Articles. Its activities include technological and building engineering, assisting the Murmansk region  enterprises in assessing the quality of local natural and technogenic building  resources and articles, and examining the technical  state of buildings and structures.

New technologies and commercialization::

  • a technology of coloured silicate bricks withan organic-silicate coating introduced at the Olenegorsk silicate brick plant (OSBP);
  • a technology  meetingthe the challenge of entrained industrial dust utilization such as side products of carbonatite roasting at OSBP and shungite at Murmansk Shungizit JSC  in the production of silicate materials and wall blocks of light-concrete;
  • the areas of utilization for  subgrade overburden nepheline-bearing rocks of Apatit JSC mines were outlined and further real- ized in road-base making;
  • substantiate the possibility of using ash-and slag mixtures of the Apatity TPP in the production of cellular, light and heavy concretes;
  • advanced vermiculite-containing  materials on the basis of the Kovdor vermiculite deposit for inflammable roof covering, heat-resistant structural-heat-insulating  concretes, and fire-protecting fillers of electric cable passages in building structures. The technology of asphalt mastic covering of industrial water boilers based on vermiculite-containing mixtures was realized at Apatit JSC;
  • it was recommended to recover ash-and-slag mixtures (ASM) of the Apatity Thermal Power Plant as a mineral dopant to concretes;
  • a technology of artificial porous fillers from local expanding shales and light-weight concrete preparation on their basis;
  • a technology of high-quality ornamental concretes based on local aggregates has been developed;
  • a technology of composite multilayer materials based on gas-ash concrete and polystyrene, yielding articles with improved phisico-mechanical and thermal-technical properties, has been developed.
